Meaning Of Life Stacks Pilsner, Vienna and Munich Malt in One Festbier

Three malts do the talking here. Establishment built its festival lager on a Weyermann Pilsner base with Vienna and Munich stacked on top, hopped it with Hallertauer Mittelfruh, and timed it to land for Czechtoberfest.

The grain bill is where this one starts. The Establishment Brewing Company has built Meaning Of Life on a base of Weyermann Pilsner malt with Vienna and Munich layered over it, a stack the Calgary brewery credits for the beer's soft bread crust and its touch of biscuit and toasted character. It is a Modern German Festbier at 5.8 percent, arriving for Czechtoberfest on September 26.

Those three malts are a deliberate sequence rather than a list. Pilsner malt is the pale, clean foundation that gives a lager its light body and not much else. Vienna adds a faint toast and a deeper gold. Munich sits further along again, richer and maltier, the grain most responsible for what people recognize as a German lager's warmth. Stacking all three lets a brewer build color and bread character gradually, without the roast that a darker specialty malt would drag in. Weyermann, the Bamberg maltster supplying the base, is a name that turns up in this style's recipes about as often as any.

The hop is Hallertauer Mittelfruh, one of the classic German noble varieties. Establishment says it brings delicate floral, herbal and lightly spicy notes. That is the usual reason a brewer chooses it: noble hops are prized for aroma and restraint rather than bitterness, which matters in a beer this pale, where there is nothing to hide behind. A clean fermentation and crisp finish, the brewery says, keep the whole thing tight.

Establishment lists the beer's notes as Oma's Fresh Bread, Wildflower Honey and Crisp Autumn Breeze, and calls it golden, crisp and built for the festival tent. Its own summary is a modern German Festbier with Calgary character.

The release is timed to the brewery's Czechtoberfest, which returns to the 1 Street SE taproom on September 26 for a third year. Meaning Of Life is available in the taproom, through the brewery's online shop, and in stores across Alberta.
