Hazy Days Route #54 Trials a Blend of Two Hazy Yeasts

Guggman Haus trials a blend of two hazy IPA yeast strains in Hazy Days Route #54, its strongest double NEIPA of the week, layering Superdelic hops over a Simcoe and Citra base.

Guggman Haus Brewing Co. is trialing a blend of two different hazy IPA yeast strains in Hazy Days Route #54, the brewery's latest double NEIPA. The hop bill features Superdelic layered over a base of Simcoe and Citra.

At 9.3 percent ABV, it's the stronger of two Hazy Days releases the brewery tapped this week, alongside Route #53. Each entry in the series carries its own hop and process combination and isn't meant to be repeated once it's gone, which is where the yeast experiment fits: Route #54 doubles as both a beer release and a live test of a house technique.

Thinking about the hops and flavor profile

Yeast strain choice shapes a hazy IPA nearly as much as the hops do, since different strains carry different fruity ester production and can hold more or less hop material in suspension. Blending two strains in one batch is a way of hedging between two different textural and aromatic outcomes rather than committing to one house yeast character outright, and it's the kind of process detail that's usually invisible to a drinker unless the brewery says so outright. On the hop side, Superdelic's candy, citrus, and berry notes sitting over the more familiar tropical punch of Simcoe and Citra gives the beer a recognizable West Coast-leaning base with a newer, brighter hop doing the top-note work.

Hazy Days Route #54 tapped Thursday, August 13, at both Guggman Haus taproom locations.
