Avextir Keeps the Same Fruit Trio and Triples the Dose

Passion fruit, mango and peach is a combination Adroit Theory has run several times already. The only thing that changed for this one is the amount of fruit, which went up by a factor of three.

Passion fruit, mango and peach is not new ground for Adroit Theory Brewing Company. The brewery says outright that it has employed the combination several times, and that it rates it highly enough to keep coming back.

So the change for Avextir is not the fruit. It is the quantity. The brewery's approach, in its own framing, was that if the combination was going to be improved, the straightforward move was simply to use more of it - three times as much in this case.

That is a blunter lever than it sounds. In a smoothie sour, fruit is not only flavor. It carries pulp, which is where the style's thickness comes from, and it brings its own acidity on top of whatever the souring has already contributed. Tripling the addition pushes all three at once: more aroma, more body, and a sharper edge. Passion fruit in particular is acidic enough on its own to shift the finish.

The trio is well matched for that treatment. Mango and peach are both soft, round stone-fruit flavors that can flatten out when a beer leans sweet, and passion fruit is the one holding the tension. Weighting the whole combination heavier keeps the balance where it started rather than sending it toward syrup.

The beer runs 4.5 percent, and carries the brewery's internal series number, Ghost 1521.

Avextir is available now at the Purcellville taproom in pours and crowlers, with 20 crowlers filled.
