Maiden of Pain Keeps the Old Label, Swaps Nearly Everything Else

Adroit Theory reworks its fan-favorite Maiden of Pain Rye IPA with a lighter color and a fruit-forward hop bill, keeping the original label on a substantially revised recipe.

Adroit Theory Brewing Company is bringing back Maiden of Pain, a Rye IPA first brewed in 2024 that the brewery says its fans ranked as the top Rye IPA in Virginia on Untappd. As a thank-you, Adroit Theory reworked the recipe with what it calls major enhancements to the malt and hop plan, while keeping the original label.

The changes are substantial. The beer has been lightened from an amber, caramel-forward color to a lighter golden one, a shift the brewery says lets the spicy rye character stand out more. The hop profile has also moved away from a classic pine and grass character toward a more modern, fruit-forward one, built on a double dry hop of Citra and Nectaron.

Maiden of Pain is available Friday on draft and in cans at the Purcellville taproom.
