Cosmic Debris Pairs Golden Naked Oats With Powdered Citra
Golden naked oats on the malt side, Motueka and Talus and a powdered form of Citra on the hop side, and only 4.6 percent to carry all of it. Great Lakes is calling the result soft and juicy, with the space-junk label to match.

The malt bill is the part worth pausing on. Great Lakes Brewery built its new hazy pale ale on golden naked oats, a huskless malted oat that shows up more often in darker beers than in something built to taste like citrus and tropical fruit.
Cosmic Debris is a hazy pale ale at 4.6 percent ABV and 20 IBU. The brewery lists malted barley, oats and wheat on the grain side, and Motueka, Citra LUPOMAX and Talus on the hop side. There is also what Great Lakes describes only as a special yeast strain, which it does not name.
That hop trio covers a lot of ground. Motueka is a New Zealand variety with a lime and lemon character. Talus, a comparatively recent American release descended from Sabro, is the one usually credited with the resinous, dank, slightly pink-grapefruit edge. Citra needs no introduction, but the LUPOMAX designation is doing real work: it is a concentrated hop product, sorted to raise the lupulin content well above what whole cones deliver, so a smaller charge lands a larger share of oil and aroma. It is a familiar piece of equipment in hazy brewing at this point, and it is a large part of how a beer this modest in strength ends up described in exclamation points.
The brewery's own note runs to exactly that: tropical fruit, citrus and dankness, "they're all here." On the product page it settles down slightly and describes bright fruity flavours and a creamy mouthfeel, with the beer landing soft and juicy.
The name and the space-junk label follow from a bit of in-house mythology about a crew sent to fetch hops from orbit, returning with a delicious payload and one very expensive fuel bill. Great Lakes suggests a GLB pub pint at 3 to 5 degrees Celsius.
Cosmic Debris arrives Thursday, September 25, at the Etobicoke brewery, the GLB Brewpub on Lower Jarvis Street in Toronto, and the online shop. Cans are 473ml at $3.35, or $65 for a case. It lands the day before GLB Beer Week begins.
