Absacker Helles Lager Roughly Translates to Night-Cap

Great Lakes Brewery brings back Absacker Helles Lager, a German-style pale lager whose name means night-cap, brewed in collaboration with Bavaria's Brauerei Rittmayer, family-owned since 1422.

Great Lakes Brewery has released Absacker Helles Lager, a German-style pale lager the brewery originally developed in collaboration with Braumeister Kevin Dusel of Brauerei Rittmayer, a Franconia, Germany brewery that has been family owned since 1422. The name itself is a small piece of context worth knowing: Absacker roughly translates to "night-cap," a fitting label for a lager built to be easy and unfussy rather than a showpiece.

Great Lakes describes Helles as easy drinking and flavourful by design, and the style itself is meant to be quietly precise rather than dramatic, built on malt sweetness balanced against a lighter touch of hop character. The brewery says the whole team looks forward to the beer's return each time it comes back around. It comes in at 5.0 percent ABV.

Absacker Helles Lager is available Thursday at the Great Lakes brewery, the GLB Brewpub, and the Great Lakes online shop.
