Pumpkin Ale Lands in Mid-August, and the Brewery Knows It

Great Lakes Brewery jumps the calendar with Pumpkin Ale, brewed with locally grown pumpkin and spiced with cinnamon, clove, nutmeg, and allspice.

Great Lakes Brewery is getting an early start on autumn with the return of Pumpkin Ale, brewed with what the brewery describes as a mountain of locally grown pumpkin and spiced with cinnamon, clove, nutmeg, and allspice, the standard pumpkin-pie quartet built directly into the beer rather than left to a garnish.

At 5.5 percent ABV, Great Lakes pitches the beer as working for both crisp fall days and the last stretch of late summer evenings, and the brewery's own announcement seemed to acknowledge the early timing with a wink, asking readers outright whether a mid-August pumpkin release counts as jumping the gun.

Pumpkin Ale is available Thursday at the Great Lakes brewery, the GLB Brewpub, and the Great Lakes online shop, with cans also expected at the LCBO soon after.
