One Ring to Rule Them All Runs on Peach Rings and Jalapeno

Corporate Ladder took the most famous artifact in fantasy literature and conditioned a rum barrel-aged dessert beer on ring-shaped candy, then added orange, lime and jalapeno to keep it from going entirely sweet.

The pun is the entry point. Corporate Ladder Brewing Company named a beer after the most consequential object in Tolkien's legendarium and then conditioned it on peach rings, the candy, because they are also rings.

What sits under the joke is more considered than the joke suggests. One Ring to Rule Them All is a rum barrel-aged gluten free dessert beer at 10 percent, conditioned with peach rings, orange, lime and jalapeno.

Gluten free dessert beer is not a novelty line at this brewery. Corporate Ladder describes its own range as running from traditional lagers through gluten free beers built around desserts, and two of the eight beers on Saturday's Lord of the Rings lineup come out of that program.

Peach and jalapeno has a long track record outside brewing. Peach jalapeno jam, salsa and hot sauce all work off the same principle, which is that capsaicin behaves differently against sweet stone fruit than it does against anything savory. The heat arrives late and clears quickly instead of stacking. Adding lime and orange moves the whole profile further toward something you would recognize from a glass rather than a jar.

The barrel choice follows the same logic. Rum leaves behind molasses and brown sugar where a bourbon barrel would push vanilla and char to the front, and that sits closer to the fruit than a spirit-forward barrel would.

This is one of two chile beers on the lineup, and it takes the milder of the two peppers. The habanero went into You Shall Not Pass.

One Ring to Rule Them All pours on draft from noon on Saturday, September 12, at the Palmetto beer garden, with 16 ounce two-packs to go at $22. All event beer sales are in person, first come, first served, while supplies last.
