It Comes in Pints? Answers Its Own Question in 16 Ounce Cans

Corporate Ladder named a hazy IPA after Pippin's reaction to his first pint, then packaged it in 16 ounce cans. The hop bill splits between American Citra and a New Zealand pair, Nectaron and Motueka.

The joke lands before you get to the beer. It Comes in Pints? is sold in 16 ounce cans, which is to say: yes, it does.

Corporate Ladder Brewing Company's hazy IPA sits at 7 percent and takes its name from Pippin's reaction in the Prancing Pony at Bree, when Merry turns up carrying a full pint and Pippin discovers this is an option.

The hop bill is Citra Dynaboost, Nectaron, Citra and Motueka, and it splits neatly across two hop-growing regions. Citra covers the American side in two forms, the standard pellet and the Dynaboost concentrate the brewery has used across several recent hop-forward releases, including two other beers pouring at Saturday's event.

The New Zealand pair is where it gets more specific. Nectaron is the newer of the two, a variety released commercially only in recent years, and it pushes hard into tropical fruit, with pineapple and stone fruit ahead of citrus. Motueka is the older and quieter one, closer to lime and lemongrass with a soft herbal edge it inherits from its Saaz ancestry.

Put together on paper, that is a hazy IPA anchored in Citra's grapefruit and passionfruit with the New Zealand hops pulling the aromatics sideways toward lime and pineapple. Motueka in particular tends to read as bright and a little savory rather than sweet, which is a useful counterweight in a style that can otherwise drift toward juice.

There is an easy pairing available on site. Doner Kebab on Wheels is serving at the event from noon to 11 p.m., and a hazy IPA with lime and lemongrass running underneath it would sit well against garlic sauce and spiced meat.

It Comes in Pints? pours on draft from noon on Saturday, September 12, at the Palmetto beer garden, with 16 ounce four-packs to go at $24. All event beer sales are in person, first come, first served, while supplies last.
