Hop saturated is not a formal style. It is a claim about proportion, and Fangorn Forest's hop bill is where Corporate Ladder Brewing Company makes good on it.
The Palmetto brewery built the triple IPA at 10 percent on five hop additions:
- Citra Dynaboost
- Citra
- Mosaic
- Citra Cryo
- Citra Hyperboost
The repetition is the point, and it is worth slowing down on, because those four entries are not the same thing written four times. Pellet hops deliver aroma along with a quantity of plant matter. Cryo hops are the lupulin separated out from the leaf, so the same weight carries a far higher concentration of the oils and resins that actually smell like anything. Dynaboost and Hyperboost are further-processed Citra products, the kind of concentrated material a brewery can dose late without packing the tank with vegetation or losing volume to absorption.
Stacking them is not redundancy. Each form presents a different slice of the same variety, which lets a brewer push Citra's grapefruit and passionfruit character well past what pellets alone would reach at a sane dose.
Mosaic is the only point of contrast. It runs darker and more tropical than Citra, with blueberry and stone fruit alongside a dank edge, and on a bill this single-minded that one variety is carrying the whole job of keeping the beer from landing on a single note.
Citra Dynaboost is becoming a fixture at the brewery. It turns up three times across Saturday's eight beers, in Fangorn Forest, Long Bottom Leaf and It Comes in Pints?, and it has appeared across several recent Corporate Ladder releases outside the event.
Fangorn is Tolkien's ancient forest, home to the tree-shepherding Ents and the densest thing on his map. The brewery has matched it to the densest hop bill on the lineup.
Fangorn Forest pours on draft from noon on Saturday, September 12, at the Palmetto beer garden, and goes home in 16 ounce four-packs at $28. Everything at "There and Back Again" is first come, first served while supplies last, and all event beer sales are in person.
