Hypa #2 Keeps the Hops, Rewrites the Texture Around Them

Citra, Amarillo and Mosaic come back untouched. The recipe around them did not: Bas-Canada says it reworked this entry in its Hypa series to improve the texture and how the beer carries its hops.

Citra, Amarillo and Mosaic is about as settled as an American hop combination gets. On this version of Hypa #2, that is the part that stayed the same.

Brasserie du Bas-Canada returned the India Pale Ale to its online shop this morning. The Gatineau brewery says the recipe has been slightly modified to improve the texture and the character of the hops, and describes this version as very generously hopped. It runs 6.5 percent ABV in 473 ml cans, with a limit of 24 cans per person.

The hop trio is the familiar one, and Bas-Canada calls it exactly that: the classic American hops. Citra supplies citrus and tropical fruit, Mosaic brings berry and a faintly dank edge, and Amarillo is the orange and stone-fruit note between them. The combination has been load-bearing in American IPA long enough that it is less a choice than a baseline, which is part of what makes a revision aimed elsewhere interesting.

The brewery has not said what it altered, and that is the honest limit of what is known here. What is worth explaining is why texture is the lever to reach for when the hops are already settled. In a heavily hopped IPA, body and mouthfeel decide how the aromatics actually arrive. A softer, fuller beer carries hop flavor differently than a lean, crisp one does, and the same hop charge can read as either rounded or sharp depending on what it is sitting in. Adjusting that is a quieter change than swapping a variety, and a more specific one.

Hypa is a running series for the brewery, and the number marks which version this is rather than a separate beer. That framing is the useful context for a returning release: it is presented as a recipe under revision rather than a fixed thing brought back out of storage.

Cans went on sale online at 11 a.m. today at bascanada.beer, packed at the Gatineau site. Buyers have a week to collect an order, and the Gatineau tasting room is open today. Hypa #2 is released alongside Petit Chicago and Fuegitos.
