Fuegitos Means Little Fires, but the Notes Run to Sorbet

A pale ale named for little fires, described in notes of tropical fruit, orange and citrus sorbet. Citra and Mosaic at 5.5 percent, which is hazy IPA hopping run at pale ale strength.

Fuegitos is a Spanish diminutive: little fires. The tasting notes go somewhere considerably colder.

Brasserie du Bas-Canada brought the pale ale back this morning, hopped with Citra and Mosaic. The brewery says it overflows with notes of tropical fruit, orange and citrus sorbet, over what it describes as a superb texture at a deliberately light strength. The beer is 5.5 percent ABV in 473 ml cans, with a limit of 24 cans per person.

The strength is the detail doing the most work here. Citra and Mosaic together are the standard pairing behind a great many hazy and juicy IPAs, and that combination usually turns up somewhere north of 6.5 percent. Running it in a pale ale at 5.5 keeps the aromatic payload while taking the alcohol out from under it. That is a decision about how much of the beer a person can reasonably drink, and Bas-Canada is presenting the lighter ABV as part of the point rather than as a limitation.

Citrus sorbet is the more unusual note in the brewery's list, and it is describing texture as much as flavor. Sorbet implies sweetness cut hard by acidity, plus something cold and smooth in the way it lands. Set next to the brewery's claim about the beer's texture, the two descriptions are pointing at the same quality from different directions.

A beer built this way would sit well next to something salty and fried, or with a dish carrying real chili heat. The citrus lift has somewhere to go against fat and spice, and the modest alcohol does not compound the burn the way a stronger IPA can.

Cans went on sale online at 11 a.m. today through bascanada.beer, packed at the brewery's Gatineau location. Orders can be picked up within the week, and the Gatineau tasting room is open today. Fuegitos is the third beer in the release, after Petit Chicago and Hypa #2. The brewery has a separate Oktoberfest lineup landing at its Hautes-Plaines site later this week.
