Ginger Typhoon is back at Blood Brothers Brewing, and the Toronto brewery has kept the nautical theme running end to end. The beer is a ginger beer at 5 percent ABV, packaged in 473 mL tall cans. Blood Brothers says it is built on a proprietary blend of spices and, in its own phrasing, boat loads of ginger.
The brewery describes a spicy kick, a heat that builds, and a touch of sweetness holding it together. The building part is the detail worth flagging. Ginger's pungency is not capsaicin heat, and it behaves differently in the glass - it tends to accumulate over a few mouthfuls rather than announce itself and fade. Fresh root shows that more plainly than an extract would.
The theme is thorough. The name is a storm, the description measures ginger by the boatload, and the can sets a tall ship inside a life ring with the words ginger beer wrapped around the ring. The brewery's own release photograph goes one further and balances a knob of raw ginger on the head of the pour.
An alcoholic ginger beer is a less common thing to find in a craft brewery's tall cans than the soft drink of the same name would suggest, and it puts the ginger in the position of the main event rather than a mixer sitting under a measure of rum.
Cans are available now at the brewery on Geary Avenue in Toronto and through its online shop. Ginger Typhoon arrives the same week as Night Queen, a New Zealand-hopped hazy IPA.
