Half Full Brewery is not being coy about the target on this one. Watermelon Supernova is a session sour at 4.5% ABV. The Stamford, Connecticut brewery describes it as a light sour with fruity, tart flavors that taste, in its words, just like a Watermelon Sour Patch Kid.
Naming a specific candy turns out to be a more useful piece of information than most tasting notes manage. It signals that the sourness is meant to arrive up front and fade quickly rather than sit as lingering acidity. It also places the fruit firmly at the confectionery end of watermelon rather than the fresh-cut end. Whether that appeals is a matter of taste, but nobody is going to be caught off guard by what turns up in the glass.
Supernova is a recurring line for the brewery, and the cans make the family resemblance plain: the same starburst artwork and drifting color blobs, recolored for each fruit. Watermelon gets pink and green. Its sibling in this drop, Blackberry Supernova, gets purple and deep navy. The two were photographed together for the brewery's announcement. That is a reasonable hint about how they are meant to be bought.
Watermelon Supernova arrives as part of Half Full's Summer of Sours run and is among the recent releases available at the brewery's Stamford taproom and at Third Place.
