Blueberry Raspberry Sour Gives Each Berry a Different Job

Half Full's Summer of Sours run continues with a 4.5% blueberry and raspberry sour, a two-berry pairing that works because each fruit is covering a different job.

Half Full Brewery has spent the season working through a running program it calls Summer of Sours, and the Blueberry Raspberry Sour is the latest entry. The Stamford, Connecticut brewery puts it at 4.5% ABV. It describes the beer as bright and juicy, bursting with fresh blueberry and raspberry flavors, with a tart and refreshing finish.

Two-berry sours are common enough that nobody bothers explaining the pairing anymore, but there is a reason this particular one keeps coming back. Blueberry brings depth and a soft, almost jammy sweetness without contributing much acidity of its own. Raspberry supplies the sharp edge and most of the aroma. In a base beer that is already tart, that division of labor is what keeps the fruit from flattening into a single note.

At 4.5% it sits at the light end of the brewery's sour range. That is the point of a summer series. This would go well with something salty and fried - the tartness cuts through in the same way a squeeze of lemon does.

The Blueberry Raspberry Sour is listed among Half Full's recent releases, available at the brewery's Stamford taproom and at Third Place. That second space runs as a coffee house by day and a tasting room by night.
