Blackberry Supernova Is the Supernova Built on Real Puree

The two Supernova sours that Half Full released together take opposite routes to fruit. Blackberry, at 4.8%, is the one built on real puree rather than a candy reference.

The two Supernova sours that Half Full Brewery put out together take opposite routes to the same destination. One is built to taste like a specific candy. The other is built on fruit.

Blackberry Supernova, a session sour at 4.8% ABV, is brewed with real blackberry puree. The Stamford, Connecticut brewery credits it for a bright berry flavor, a touch of tropical sweetness, and a crisp, refreshing tart finish. Puree is the standard route for a fruited sour of this kind, usually added after primary fermentation so the fruit character carries through without being scrubbed out by the yeast. It brings pulp and pigment along with the flavor, which is why beers made this way tend to arrive with real depth of color rather than a tint.

Blackberry suits the format. It is one of the darker berries, with a deep, faintly wine-like character and enough natural tartness that it does not have to fight a sour base to register. The touch of tropical sweetness the brewery mentions is the detail worth watching for - blackberry carries a jammy edge that can read as tropical when it is not being crowded out by sharper fruit.

At 4.8% it is the stronger of the two Supernovas in this drop by a small margin. Blackberry Supernova is among Half Full's recent releases, available at the brewery's Stamford taproom and at Third Place.
