Fat Hill Brewing has Festbier on tap, a 7.1 percent German-style lager at 17 IBU that the Mason City brewery describes as balancing sweet, bready pilsner malt with the added richness of German specialty malts and a touch of floral Hallertau Mittelfruh hops.
Festbier has become the modern standard pour at Munich's Oktoberfest, edging out the darker, maltier Marzen that used to hold that spot. Fat Hill frames this one the same way: golden rather than amber, with a clean, crisp finish meant to be lighter and more refreshing than its Marzen predecessor while still carrying enough malt backbone to read as a fall beer. Hallertau Mittelfruh is one of Germany's oldest noble hop varieties, valued for a mild, floral character rather than raw bitterness - a fitting match for a style built around restraint instead of intensity.
Festbier is available now on tap at Fat Hill Brewing in Mason City.
