Winter Saturation Answers the Cold With Cranberry and Cara Cara

Cabin's newest Saturation beer arrives pointed directly at the season it is named for. Pomegranate, Cara Cara orange and cranberry go in over a Citra and Mosaic base, and none of it is remotely dark or warming.

Most breweries treat a winter release as an instruction to go dark. Cabin Brewing Company has read the same assignment and turned in a bright pink pale ale.

Winter Saturation is out now in Calgary, a 5% fruited hazy pale ale available on tap, in cans, and in growlers from the brewery's 36 Avenue SE taproom. It is the newest entry in Cabin's Saturation series.

The build starts with hops and then goes somewhere else. Citra and Mosaic lay the foundation, a pairing that has been the default citrus-and-stone-fruit engine of hazy beer for a decade. On top of that Cabin has added pomegranate, Cara Cara orange, and cranberry.

That middle ingredient is worth slowing down on. Cara Cara is a named navel orange varietal rather than a generic one, distinguished by pink-red flesh and a sweetness that reads closer to red berry than to standard orange juice. Choosing it next to cranberry and pomegranate suggests the fruit bill was assembled as a set rather than a list, since all three land in the same tart red register.

The brewery describes the result as juicy orange, tart red berries, vibrant pomegranate, and a snap of acidity carried in a soft haze. Those are Cabin's tasting notes rather than a verdict, but the acidity claim is the one that separates this from a sweeter fruited beer, and it is consistent with what cranberry and pomegranate actually bring.

Series context makes the positioning clearer. Cabin's current tap list carries three Saturation beers at once: Super Saturation, a 6% New England pale ale, and Max Sat, an 8% Pacific hazy IPA, alongside this one. At 5%, Winter Saturation is the smallest of the three, and the only one built on fruit additions rather than hops alone.

The brewery's framing is openly contrarian about the season. Its stated pitch is that winter beer does not have to be dark, heavy, "or remotely interested in hibernating."

Winter Saturation is pouring now at the Calgary taproom, with cans and growlers to go.
