Quantum Vision Pairs Fresh Citra and Mosaic, Cans Follow Tuesday

Threshold's sixth fresh hop of the season puts undried Citra and Mosaic into a West Coast IPA. The brewery's own assessment runs to four words, one of which is dank.

Fresh hop season is a logistics problem disguised as a beer style. Cones have to come off the bine and into the kettle inside about a day, before the undried plant matter starts working against the brewer, and Threshold Brewing & Blending has now run that errand six times this season.

Fresh Hop Quantum Vision went on tap at the Montavilla taproom this week, a West Coast IPA at 6.5 percent brewed with fresh Citra and Mosaic. The brewery lists Coleman Agriculture as the source of the cones. Threshold's assessment in its newsletter is brief: "omg this one is DANK and packs a punch."

That is not much to go on, and it does not need to be. Citra and Mosaic together are the most widely used aroma pairing in American IPA, a combination so established that most drinkers have an expectation loaded before the glass arrives - grapefruit and passionfruit from the Citra, blueberry and pine resin from the Mosaic. The interesting part is what happens when they show up undried.

Fresh hops carry moisture, chlorophyll and leaf matter that the kiln would otherwise remove. In an IPA with this much malt and bitterness underneath it, that green edge has somewhere to sit, which is why fresh hop season belongs so overwhelmingly to the style. A West Coast IPA is built to absorb exactly the kind of raw, herbal weight that would flatten a pilsner.

Quantum Vision is also the beer that pushed Threshold's 2026 fresh hop count to seven and triggered the first prize tier on the taproom's fresh hop punch card. Draft pours earn a punch, prizes land at six, eight and ten, and the card runs to a finale party on Friday, October 9.

It moves into cans on Tuesday, September 22, alongside three more fresh hop releases. Draft pours continue at the Montavilla taproom in the meantime.
