Pumpkinator Started Out as Divine Reserve No. 9 in 2009

Saint Arnold's imperial pumpkin stout began in 2009 as Divine Reserve No. 9, a numbered one-off that was never meant to come back. It refused to stay one. The 2026 release lands September 21.

In 2009, the beer now called Pumpkinator went out under a number instead of a name. It was Divine Reserve No. 9, one entry in the numbered series Saint Arnold reserves for its more ambitious brews. The point of that series is that each beer happens once. Houston drinkers had other ideas. The beer returned under the Pumpkinator name in October 2011 and has been an annual fixture ever since.

This year it arrives early. Saint Arnold has set the release for Monday, September 21, ahead of the October slot the beer has traditionally held. The brewery is framing the move in the Halloween register you would expect, saying Pumpkinator has proved too powerful to be contained until October.

The beer is an imperial pumpkin stout at 10.3 percent and 34 IBU. Saint Arnold builds it on pale two row, caramel and black malts, hops it with Cascade and Liberty, and adds pumpkin, molasses, brown sugar and spices. The brewery describes it as big, black and full of spice, and reaches for a specific image on its website: walking into your mother's kitchen while she is baking thirty-seven pumpkin pies.

The sugars are the part worth pausing on. Molasses and brown sugar both carry a dark, faintly burnt sweetness, and they sit in the same register as the black malt rather than pushing against it. That matters more in a pumpkin beer than it might elsewhere. Pumpkin on its own contributes more body than flavor, so what most drinkers register as "pumpkin" is really the spice bill and the sugars standing behind it. Saint Arnold is stacking those deliberately instead of asking the squash to do work it cannot do.

The accolades the brewery mentions are countable ones. Pumpkinator took gold at the Great American Beer Festival in 2017 and bronze in 2019, and silver at the World Beer Cup in both 2012 and 2023. Saint Arnold also calls it the most expensive beer it has ever brewed.

Release day doubles as Pumpkinator Day at the brewery's Beer Garden and Restaurant in Houston. The 2026 beer pours on draft and cask alongside a 2025 and a 2013 vintage, with a flight covering the lineup, though the cask version is not included in it. Limited edition glassware, tie dye shirts, flannels and other merch go on sale the same day, while supplies last.

The original is packaged in 22 ounce bottles and reaches stores on September 21. Saint Arnold is also taking preorders for pickup at the brewery, available that day only between 11 a.m. and 9 p.m., with bottle limits in place. Anything left after the presale goes on sale at the Beer Garden and Restaurant starting September 22.
