Terrace Haze Is Named for the Supporters' End, Smoke and All

Varitage's first new beer since the World Cup rush is a Double Hazy IPA named after the supporters' terraces. It is hopped entirely from the Southern Hemisphere and printed with a line about smoke rising.

Terrace Haze is named after a place in the ground, and not one where anything gets scored. Varitage Brew Works says the name comes from the terraces of the supporters' section, which the Bloomfield brewery describes as where the songs are loud, the scarves stay raised and matchday comes alive. The side of the can puts it more bluntly: where the smoke rises, legends are poured.

The beer is a Double Hazy IPA, and it joins the Varitage lineup for the first time. Mark and Neil, who sign the brewery's newsletter, describe a long stretch of being slammed with restocking after the World Cup and only now getting the shelves back in order. The email does not give an ABV, but the label in the brewery's own photograph reads 8.3 percent and 32 IBU, in 16 ounce cans.

The hop bill is worth reading as a set. Eclipse, Superdelic and Rakau all come from the Southern Hemisphere, Eclipse from Australia and the other two from New Zealand. Each accounts for a different item on Varitage's list of tasting notes. Eclipse is the citrus, running to mandarin and orange. Superdelic covers the red berry and sweet fruit end. Rakau is the stone fruit variety of the three, apricot-leaning with a resinous edge that most tropical hops do not carry. The brewery promises juicy citrus, tropical fruit, stone fruit and fresh berry in a soft, pillowy body. That list is the three hops read out more or less in order.

Cans are in the cooler now at the Washington Street taproom in downtown Bloomfield.
