Desitka Czech Pale Lager

Desitka Czech Pale Lager

Ever wonder why some beer names are just a number in disguise? Desitka means ten in Czech, a nod to the starting gravity of this new pale lager, and once you know that the whole thing makes a lot more sense.

Ever notice how the best beer names sometimes turn out to be math homework in disguise? Desitka means "ten" in Czech, and it's not just a cute word South Lake Brewing picked out of a dictionary - it refers to the starting gravity of this new pale lager, a very old-school Czech brewing convention where the beer's name literally tells you its strength before you've taken a sip.

Once you know that, the rest of the beer makes sense too. Floor-malted pilsner malt forms the base, and Saaz, the hop practically synonymous with Czech brewing, brings spicy, herbal notes on top. At 4.1 percent ABV, it's built to stay light and bready, with a crisp, slightly hoppy finish that doesn't ask much of you beyond ordering a second one. Nuanced flavor in a small package is the whole pitch here, and a beer willing to name itself after its own gravity reading is a beer confident enough not to need a flashier hook.

It's on tap now at both the Brewery and The Libation Lodge. Worth ordering just to say you know what the name means.
