Collective Effervescence

Black Spruce built a West Coast IPA around two hop extracts most people have never heard of. I had not heard of them either. The beer does not seem to mind either way.

Black Spruce named this one Collective Effervescence. It is, at minimum, an accurate description of what happens when you open the can.

Underneath the name it's a West Coast IPA, pale, bright, the sturdy bitterness the style is supposed to have. The interesting part is what they built it with: Abstrax Dolcita hop terpenes and something called Euphorics Pineapple Paradise. I did not know what a hop terpene was before this email arrived. I am not going to pretend I've since become an expert. What I can tell you is that these are newer extracts brewers use to push flavor without leaning on a wall of hops to get there, and somebody at Black Spruce is clearly paying closer attention to this than I am.

Fairbanks doesn't get much credit as a place doing interesting things with IPAs. That's probably an oversight, not a fact.

It lands Friday, July 17th, on tap alongside two other new releases from the same brewery.

Worth a taste, quietly.
