Island Time

Masthead Brewing's 2026 bourbon barrel-aged imperial sweet stout at 13.0% ABV, brewed with coconut, cacao, vanilla and habaneros for a rich, slow-building sipper in limited 500 mL bottles.

If Sovereign Citizen is Masthead Brewing Co.'s answer to a hot afternoon, Island Time is very much the opposite end of the lineup. This is the 2026 edition of the Cleveland brewery's bourbon barrel-aged imperial sweet stout, brewed with coconut, cacao, vanilla and habanero peppers, and bottled at a formidable 13.0% ABV.

That ingredient list alone tells you this is a sipper, not a session beer. Coconut, cacao and vanilla read like dessert before you even get to the bourbon barrel aging, which typically layers in warm notes of oak, caramel and a bit of boozy heat. Then there is the habanero, which is the twist that keeps Island Time from being purely a sweet, rich stout and instead gives it a slow-building warmth on the finish. It is a combination that rewards patience, the kind of beer meant to be poured into a snifter and returned to slowly rather than downed on a patio.

Masthead is releasing Island Time in 500 mL bottles, priced at $25.99 plus tax, with a limit of four bottles per person, which is a fairly clear signal that this is a limited, small-batch kind of release rather than a beer meant to sit on shelves indefinitely. Barrel-aged stouts like this tend to develop nicely with a bit of time in a cellar too, so this could be one worth setting aside for a colder night down the road.

It is available now for preorder and taproom pickup alongside Sovereign Citizen, and being 21+ with valid ID is required to purchase or pick up, standard practice for a beer this strong.

For anyone who treats big, complex stouts as a genuine hobby rather than just another beer style, Island Time looks like a serious, well-considered release. Coconut and habanero is not a pairing every brewery would attempt, but on paper it sounds like exactly the kind of contrast that makes barrel-aged stouts interesting.
