Allerton Brewing Company sits in Independence, Iowa, inside a lovingly restored downtown building that boasts a river‑side deck and a taproom that looks like a 19th‑century tavern on a designer’s vacation. Exposed brick, barn‑tin ceilings, hardwood floors and Edison bulbs give the place a vibe that says “we respect tradition, but we also know how to have a laugh.”
The brewery churns out a rotating lineup of beers, from razor‑sharp IPAs to plush, malty stouts, each crafted with top‑notch ingredients and old‑school methods (the founders who once brewed in a garage decided a proper cellar was overdue). Local flavors and quirky adjuncts pop up regularly – think Hefeweizen that sings of wheat fields and sour ales that could make a lemon jealous.
Outside, a patio overlooks the Wapsipinicon River and the iconic Independence Mill, offering a perfect backdrop for a pint or two. The staff are friendly and well‑versed, ready to explain why the hop schedule matters more than the weather forecast. Generous samplers and cans to go mean you can take a piece of this modest masterpiece home without breaking the bank. In short, Allerton delivers authenticity, character and a beer menu that makes pretentiousness look foolish.
Reviewers praised Allerton Brewing Company for its excellent atmosphere, with many noting its clean and welcoming environment, beautiful outdoor patio overlooking a river, and friendly staff. The brewery's diverse beer selection and generous samplers were also highlights.
