Freaky Fresh IPA Revives the Recipe That Started Enjoy By

Stone has pulled the original Enjoy By recipe out of the vaults and put it back on draft under a Halloween name. Eight hops, 90 IBU, 9.4 percent, and available only at Stone's own locations.

For more than a decade, Stone's Enjoy By series has made one argument over and over: an IPA is at its best young, and the label ought to say so out loud. The original run put its own consumption deadline directly in the beer's name, roughly five weeks out from packaging, and built the whole release schedule around getting it drunk before that date arrived.

Freaky Fresh IPA is where Stone says that idea began. The brewery describes it as the OG recipe from its vaults, the one that inspired the freaky, funky and fruity variants that followed. It is a West Coast double IPA at 9.4 percent and 90 IBU, and it is pouring now.

The hop bill is the part worth slowing down on. Stone lists eight varieties: Magnum, Simcoe, Cascade, Amarillo, Galaxy, Nelson, Motueka and Citra. The email's framing of classic varieties, new-school buds and multiple hemispheres is not marketing shorthand - it is a fair description of the list.

Magnum is a German bittering hop, high in alpha acid and prized for a clean bitterness rather than aroma. Cascade is the foundational American craft variety. Simcoe and Amarillo are the next generation after it, and Citra is the one that reset expectations for citrus intensity. Galaxy comes from Australia, while Nelson Sauvin and Motueka are both New Zealand. Reaching across that many growing regions in one beer is a way of stacking related fruit characters without leaning entirely on any single hop to carry them.

The 90 IBU figure is a deliberate signal. A double IPA at 9.4 percent could easily be built soft and hazy, and a great many of them are. Stone has gone the other way. The brewery's notes describe massive peach, citrus and tropical flavors over a light malt backbone, with what it calls a balance of bitterness and dryness on the finish. The aroma, by Stone's account, runs to hop resin and ripe peaches.

The seasonal packaging leans hard into the timing. The can shows Stone's gargoyle mascot amid green slime and small ghouls, and the release copy is written entirely in monster-movie register - specters of staleness, a recipe resurrected from the beyond, hops added with the fervor of a mad scientist.

Stone Enjoy By Series: Freaky Fresh IPA is available now on draft and in 16 oz four-packs, exclusively at Stone's own locations, while supplies last.
