Rose Bottle Service Covers Three Brunch Cocktails in One Fruit Bill

Five fruits go into this smoothie sour, and they sort themselves neatly into brunch drinks: citrus for the mimosa, berries for the rose, peach for the bellini. Pick-up starts Friday.

The name is doing two jobs at once, and so is the fruit.

Rose Bottle Service is a 7 percent smoothie sour from Hitchhiker Brewing Co., brewed with wheat and oats and conditioned on five separate fruits: oranges, tangerines, raspberry, strawberry and peach. The brewery files it under a longer descriptor - a raspberry, strawberry, peach mimosa smoothie sour - which points at the drink it is chasing.

Sort that list and it stops looking like a pile of fruit. Orange and tangerine are the mimosa. Raspberry and strawberry supply the colour and the red-fruit character a rose wine is bought for. Peach belongs to a third cocktail entirely, the bellini, and its job here is probably texture as much as flavour, since peach brings a soft, nectar-like body that suits a beer built on oats and wheat.

Hitchhiker describes notes of orange juice, red fruit, flowers and citrus. The floral note is the one worth watching, because it is what separates a beer like this from a fruit cup - the thing that keeps five fruits reading as a drink rather than a list.

At 7 percent, it is also stronger than any of the brunch cocktails it references, which is worth knowing before the second can.

Rose Bottle Service is available for online pre-order now. Pick-up begins Friday, September 18 at Hitchhiker's Mt. Lebanon and Sharpsburg taprooms.
