Migration Brewing's low-ABV series has spent its run on beers built to be drunk in quantity. The newest entry goes after a cocktail instead.
Get Low Mojito is a pub release running 2.5 percent, which the brewery labels a lager with lime and mint. Migration describes notes of lime and mint, says it drinks like a cool breeze, and calls it the perfect bookend to summer.
The timing supports that last part. It arrives in the second week of September, which in Portland is roughly when the case for a 2.5 percent lime drink starts to expire.
Mint is the detail worth pausing on. It turns up rarely in beer, and when it does it is usually in a stout, where chocolate malt can absorb it. On a pale lager there is nothing to hide behind - no roast, no real bitterness, very little body. That is either a problem or the entire design, and at this strength it reads as the design. A beer this light has room for a loud ingredient.
The strength is genuinely low. Session beers generally begin around 4 percent and most low-ABV lagers land near 3.5. At 2.5, Get Low Mojito sits well under that, which is what the series name has been promising all along.
It is pouring now at Migration's pubs.
