Centennial Fresh Hop IPA Opens a Run of Five in Ten Days

Gigantic has five fresh hop beers landing between September 4 and September 14. This one went first, built on fresh Centennial from Crosby Hops, and the brewery is not pretending to be calm about any of it.

Gigantic Brewing Company has put five fresh hop beers on the calendar between September 4 and September 14. The first one out was built on Centennial.

Centennial Fresh Hop IPA arrived September 4 at 6.2 percent, brewed with fresh Centennial from Crosby Hops. Gigantic describes it as bright, citrusy and piney, and calls it about as fresh as beer gets.

Choosing Centennial to lead is a reasonable bit of sequencing. It is one of the varieties that set the terms for American IPA, and its grapefruit-and-pine signature is familiar enough that most drinkers already carry a reference version of it in their heads. That makes the undried edition a comparison rather than an introduction, which is not something that can be said of every hop arriving later in the run.

The pace behind it is the other thing worth noting. The four beers that follow are a fresh-hopped Oktoberfest lager, a two-brewery collaboration, a returning Simcoe IPA and a draft-only pale ale, all inside the same ten-day stretch. Gigantic calls this its most favorite time of the brewing year, and the schedule reflects it. Fresh hops are usable for hours rather than months, so a brewery either brews when the farm picks or waits until next September.

Centennial Fresh Hop IPA is out now.
