Wave Starter Wraps a Bob Pollard Collage Around a 4 Percent Lager

Warped Wing brewed a 4 percent light lager with Guided By Voices for Heedfest 2026. The can carries original collage art by frontman Bob Pollard, and the beer leaves the Dayton taproom for nowhere else.

Wave Starter reaches Warped Wing's Dayton taproom on Saturday, September 5. It does not go anywhere after that.

The beer is a light lager at 4.0 percent and 10 IBU, brewed with Guided By Voices for Heedfest 2026. The can says as much in its own fine print: a Warped Wing and Guided By Voices collaboration, brewed exclusively in celebration of Heedfest 2026.

The two parties share a hometown, which is what keeps this from reading as a licensing arrangement. Guided By Voices formed in Dayton in 1983 and remain one of the city's best-known musical exports. Warped Wing has brewed in the same city since it opened, out of a building on Wyandot Street.

The label goes further than a band name. According to the brewery, the can carries original collage artwork by Bob Pollard, the band's frontman. Pollard has built the group's album covers out of collage for years, so the packaging sits in the same visual line as the records rather than off to the side as merchandise.

As for the beer, Warped Wing describes it as crisp and easy-drinking, made for good music, good friends and a good Saturday. That is close to the entire brief. A light lager at this strength is not built to be studied in the glass. It is built to still be welcome at hour six, which is the relevant test for a taproom day that opens at nine in the morning.

Launch day

The taproom opens at 9 a.m. with premier league soccer, brunch and a Bloody Mary bar. A screening of Punk Rock Mars follows at 2:30 p.m. Nick Mitchell plays live at 3. The full food menu runs inside, with a quick grill going outside.

Wave Starter pours on tap that day, with six-packs of 12 ounce cans to take home at $9.99. It is available only at the Dayton taproom, in what the brewery calls super limited quantities.
