The Hop in Celebrity Crush Is Actually Called Krush

Gate City's new pale ale runs Citra, El Dorado and a hop called Krush, which the beer's name quietly borrows. The brewery promises juicy citrus, tropical fruit and hints of ripe melon.

Read the hop bill for Gate City Brewing Company's new pale ale and the joke in the name turns up in the second ingredient. Celebrity Crush is hopped with Citra, Krush and El Dorado.

Krush is a real variety, and a new one. It is an American hop released as HBC 586 by the Hop Breeding Company, the same program that gave the industry Citra. The two are stablemates, and both are in this beer. Krush is described in the trade as running to mango, guava, peach and navel orange, with a resinous note sitting underneath the fruit.

El Dorado is the third, and it is the one to thank if the melon arrives. Among American aroma hops it is unusual for a candied watermelon character alongside the more familiar tropical fruit. Gate City lists hints of ripe melon in its notes here, which is squarely El Dorado's territory.

The brewery describes a vibrant pale ale bursting with juicy citrus and tropical fruit, easy drinking and refreshing. Its own framing runs to film puns, from lights, camera, crush through to the idea of a favourite celebrity in beer form.

Celebrity Crush is on tap now at the Gate City taproom at 43 Magnolia Street in historic downtown Roswell.
