Mid-Octobeer

Mid-Octobeer Is a March Beer With an October Name, Out in August

Autumn lands on the brewing calendar well before it lands in South Texas. Cactus Land's Mid-Octobeer is a 6.5% Marzen heading up the Adkins brewery's Oktoberfest lager run.

Autumn arrives on the brewing calendar long before it arrives in South Texas, and Cactus Land Brewing Co. is not waiting around. Mid-Octobeer, a Marzen at 6.5% ABV, heads up a run of German lagers. The Adkins brewery says its tanks are full of them ahead of Oktoberfest. The brewery describes it as brewed the traditional way and well suited to what it calls the current semi-fall weather.

Marzen takes its name from the German word for March, the month the style was historically brewed before warm-weather brewing became impractical. The beer would then rest cold through the summer and get tapped in the autumn. That is more or less the arc this one is following. The name handles the rest: Mid-Octobeer is a pun that doubles as a serving instruction.

Getting hold of it takes a little scheduling. Cactus Land is a limited-edition operation by design, open to the public only on the first and third weekends of each month at its County Road 325 taproom southeast of San Antonio. Mid-Octobeer joins a lager list that the brewery has stacked for the season. The Oktoberfest window here is less about a release date than about which weekends you can make.
