Handsome Puts Citrus Hops Against Chocolate and Molasses

Yellow Springs Brewery's new American Brown Ale pairs chocolate and molasses malt character with American hops for a citrusy, lightly herbal finish, out now at both Ohio taprooms.

Yellow Springs Brewery released Handsome, an American Brown Ale, in cans and on draft Wednesday. The brewery describes it as moderate-bodied, with notes of chocolate and molasses carrying the malt side of the beer, at 5.5 percent ABV.

American hops round it out, with Yellow Springs pointing to a citrus and lightly herbal balance against the darker malt notes - a pairing meant to keep a style that can lean heavy and dessert-like from tipping too far in that direction. Chocolate and molasses are the two malt notes doing the heavy lifting here, and putting a brighter, citrus-forward hop character against them is a reasonably direct way to keep a brown ale from reading as flat or overly sweet, without pushing it toward IPA territory either.

Handsome is available now in cans and on draft at both of Yellow Springs Brewery's Ohio taprooms.
