Boy Howdy! Cream Ale Fills In for a Decades-Old Prop Can

Dogfish Head partners with CREEM Magazine to turn the publication's decades-old fictional beer prop into a real Cream Ale, backing the release with a branded merch collection.

For decades, a can labeled Boy Howdy! turned up in photographs alongside rock and roll performers as a prop for CREEM Magazine - a can that never held any actual beer. Dogfish Head has now partnered with CREEM to close that gap, releasing Boy Howdy! Cream Ale.

The choice of style is notable on its own: a cream ale is a light, easy-drinking American lager-adjacent ale, which fits the "grab one between sets" energy the prop can always implied better than a more assertive style would have. Dogfish Head describes the finished beer as crisp and crushable, positioning it as the "official beer of rock 'n' roll."

The brewery is backing the release with a Boy Howdy! x CREEM Magazine merch collection - a t-shirt, hat, can glass, and can cooler - treating the launch as a full collaboration rather than a one-off can design. Boy Howdy! Cream Ale is available now through Dogfish Head's online shop and at its coastal Delaware locations, with more background on the partnership posted to the brewery's blog.
