Hazy 5.0

Calling a hazy IPA series 'Hazy Dragon' and then naming the fifth entry 'Hazy 5.0' is either the laziest sequel-naming convention in craft beer or a brewery that knows nobody needs the drama spelled out twice.

Somewhere a marketing team is weeping, because Alley Kat named the fifth installment of its Hazy Dragon series "Hazy 5.0" and moved on with its day. No subtitle, no mythology, just a version number slapped on a beer that apparently didn't need the extra effort to sell itself.

That confidence is at least earned. Nectaron, Erebus, and Alora hops make up the trio here, a lineup unusual enough that most drinkers won't recognize all three names, which is precisely the kind of hop selection worth paying attention to. Ripe peach, passionfruit, citrus, and tropical fruit come through bold, wrapped in the smooth, pillowy body double IPAs are supposed to have and don't always deliver. At 50 IBU and 7.5 percent ABV, this is not a subtle beer, but subtlety was never really the Hazy Dragon pitch to begin with.

It's out now at the Alley Kat taproom and select restaurants and liquor stores around Alberta. A fifth entry in any beer series is either a sign the wells run dry or a sign the recipe still works - Hazy 5.0 reads like the latter.
