Chai Lager

Johnson City's taproom manager made a house chai concentrate, and now there's a very limited batch of Chai Lager to show for it. Small batch, both locations, gone whenever it's gone.

Someone at Johnson City Brewing's Downtown taproom apparently spent some amount of time developing a house-made chai concentrate. That is, on its own, a slightly unusual amount of effort for a beer that only exists as a very limited batch.

Chai Lager is exactly what it sounds like: a lager brewed with that in-house chai concentrate, coming in at 4.5% ABV, on draft at both the Walnut Street and Boones Creek locations starting Wednesday, July 29th. The brewery is treating it as a one-off rather than a flagship, so there is no five-paragraph backstory here, just a taproom manager who made a concentrate good enough to build a beer around. Johnson City also runs a quarterly "beer poking" event, where a red-hot fire poker gets plunged straight into a mug to caramelize the sugars, which is a considerably higher-effort tradition than most breweries bother with.

Available now through the last week of July, at both locations, while the keg lasts.
