Headlands Brewing has released Cargo Shorts, a New Zealand Pale Ale the brewery describes as an homage to its "fearless Kiwi leader."
Crafted with select New Zealand hops, including NZ Cascade and Waimea, the 5.5% ABV, 45 IBU pale ale is built for a lively mix of tropical citrus zest and punchy pine aromas, according to the brewery. New Zealand hop varieties have become a common way for American breweries to distinguish a pale ale from the more familiar Pacific Northwest hop character, leaning brighter and more citrus-forward than classic Cascade or Centennial.
The release lands the same week Headlands announced medals from the 2026 California State Fair, including a gold for its Whoosh! Hazy IPA. Cargo Shorts is available starting Friday at all four Headlands beer gardens.
